Some of the most complained about pain lies in one of three areas: the neck, back, and head. More people suffer from neck and back pain or headaches than any other type of pain. Most of the time, except for cases of injury, a lot of the pain comes from built up tension due to work, physical labor, and just everyday life. If you’re looking for a way to alleviate some of the tension, a good place to start is with the practice of yoga. These yoga poses can help get rid of tension and allow for a more flexible, pain free body.
Breathe- It’s sometimes funny to say that this is a “pose”, but it is certainly an important aspect of yoga. For the release of tension, sit up straight and tall in a chair or on the floor. Keep your chin parallel with the ground and place your hands on the abdomen or in your lap. Take a deep breath, inhaling with the diaphragm and taking the air in through the nose. Hold for a few seconds. Then exhale very slowly through the mouth. Keep your back and neck upright and straight through each breath. Try to get in 10 deep breaths.
Downward dog- This is a fairly famous yoga pose. For a quick visual, you’ll basically look like an upside down “v.” Stand straight with your arms at your sides. Take a deep breath, and while exhaling bend at the waist to place your hands on the floor. Walk your feet backwards until you can feel the stretch in the back, legs, or both. Keep your heels on the floor. To get up, simply walk your feet back toward your hands and stand up. If you don’t quite have the flexibility for this pose, modify by using a wall or chair for support.
Strap stretch- This can be done with anything- a belt, towel, anything. Hold the item between your hands shoulder width apart. Take your hands up above your head with your elbows straight. You should keep the item in your hand at all times throughout this stretch. Drop the chin to the chest and feel the stretch in the neck. For more stretch, let the arms fall slightly backward.
Try these yoga poses everyday to make a difference in the tension and pain felt in the neck or back. If that’s not enough to completely eliminate the pain, a trip to the chiropractor might be in order. At The Joint…the Chiropractic Place, chiropractors can help get rid of the tension in your back or neck by performing spinal manipulation. This can realign the spine and help to eliminate pain. Seeing a chiropractor along with preventative care like stretching will have you feeling better in no time.
